Mid October to mid November

Shutting down for season:

This is more of the previous month: putting away produce for the cold cellar as fast as we can. Maybe making a batch of Apple Butter. Definatly putting Cider in to make vinegar. Might make wine for the Lord's Day Communion service for the next year. Will surely be putting up last of the jellys, and maybe a last robbing of honey. Will be preparing the bees for winter. Likely to can some stewed tomatoes, for winter. Will be drying herbs, and mint . And again might have time to make cheese form the extra milk. Might in a given year have a pig to butcher. Will be dressing the Turkeys for this years harvest. Will be keeping a group of turkeys for next years breeding stock. Also might be processing a few ducks for winter tables.

This is a time to prepare the gardens for next year, we will be planting cover crops, and adding the rock minerals to bring soil to ballance. Will be doing soil testing, and teaching the yong folks what is seen in the results.  This part of the season a bit more quiet, then the previous harvest season.  That said for the first year this will be the final rush getting the cottage winterized so no one suffers the effects of spending a cold week in January.  We will also have to winterize the showers, and put heaters in the out houses, so unlike our grampa's time we can have a warm visit to the little shanty. Might be the warmest spot on the farm on some cold days. Paths will need to be fixed up, and the barn tightened down for the season,

Late fall Photo

This is a time when clothing seriously wants to have a warmer slant. The bedding should also be a little warmer. To early to bring skates

We will have Comfortors for the beds for the really cold nights, and coal for the stoves to keep you warm. Will also try to arrainge to have the old style bath tub to fill with hot water so each member with a little work may have a warm soak, and scrub.
